What Do 'Sillage' and 'Projection' Mean in Perfume?
Scroll through enough perfume reviews and you'll start seeing the same words over and over: sillage, projection, dry-down. They sound technical, but they're really just precise ways of describing something you already notice every time you wear fragrance — how far it travels, how strong it feels, and how it changes over the hours. Once you know them, shopping for perfume gets a lot easier.
What is sillage?
Sillage (pronounced see-yazh) is the trail a fragrance leaves behind as you move — the scent that lingers in a room after you've left it, or that someone notices a few seconds after you walk past. It comes from the French word for "wake," as in the trail a boat leaves in water, which is exactly the right image: it's not the scent on your skin, it's the scent you leave behind you.
A fragrance with strong sillage fills a space and stays noticeable to people around you. A fragrance with soft or "skin-scent" sillage stays close and is really only noticeable up close, like when someone leans in for a hug.
What is projection?
Projection is often confused with sillage, but they're slightly different. Projection describes how far a fragrance radiates outward from your skin in real time — essentially, its "bubble." A high-projection fragrance can be smelled by someone standing a few feet away without leaning in. A low-projection fragrance stays close to your skin and is really only detectable within arm's reach.
Think of it this way: projection is the size of the scent bubble right now, while sillage is the trail that lingers after you've moved on.
What is dry-down?
Dry-down is the final stage of a fragrance's development on skin — the scent that remains after the initial top notes have evaporated and the fragrance settles into its base. Most perfumes move through three stages:
- Top notes — the first impression, usually light and bright (citrus, fresh herbs), lasting minutes.
- Heart notes — the "true" character of the fragrance, emerging as top notes fade, usually florals or spices.
- Base notes / dry-down — the final, longest-lasting stage, typically deeper notes like amber, musk, sandalwood or vanilla.
Dry-down is often the most telling part of whether a fragrance is genuinely right for you, since it's what you — and everyone around you — will actually be smelling for most of the day.
Why concentration affects all three
Sillage, projection and dry-down aren't fixed traits of a scent — they're heavily influenced by concentration. A higher fragrance oil concentration, like parfum oil versus a standard EDT, generally produces stronger projection early on, a longer and more noticeable sillage trail, and a dry-down that stays true to the fragrance's character for far longer instead of fading into something thin.
How to use these terms when you shop
Next time you're comparing fragrances, ask these three questions instead of just "does it smell good":
- How's the sillage — will people notice it after I've left the room, or only up close?
- What's the projection — is this an office-appropriate scent bubble, or one built for a bigger presence?
- What does the dry-down actually smell like a few hours in — not just in the first five minutes?
